What the trick gets right
Sun-sign compatibility is not made up. It runs on real structure: the four elements, the three modalities, and the angle between two signs on the wheel. Two fire signs share a tempo. A fixed sign and a mutable sign negotiate control differently. Signs opposite each other pull together and struggle over the same ground. So as a first read, it works. It gives you a fast, roughly-true sketch of how two temperaments might rub together. The problem is not that the sketch is wrong. The problem is that people mistake the sketch for the portrait.
Where it falls apart
A relationship is not two sun signs meeting. It is two entire charts meeting, and the Sun is one placement in each. Reducing a person to their Sun and then reducing a relationship to two Suns is compression on top of compression. By the time you are asking "are Scorpio and Taurus compatible," you have thrown away almost everything that actually decides it.
Consider three placements the sun sign completely ignores:

A couple with "incompatible" sun signs and a beautifully woven Venus, Mars, and Moon story will outlast a couple who are both easy-going air signs and share nothing underneath. The Sun is the least of it.
What actually predicts a match
Real compatibility is not a question about two signs. It is a question about the angles between two whole charts. Astrologers have a word for it: synastry.
Synastry lays two birth charts over each other and reads the aspects between them: your Moon to their Venus, your Mars to their Saturn, your Sun to their rising. It is where "we just click" and "we cannot stop fighting about the same thing" actually live. One person’s Saturn sitting on another’s Moon feels like being loved and slightly graded at the same time. Their Venus trine your Mars feels like the room warms up when they walk in. None of that is visible from sun signs.
This is the difference between a horoscope that says "Scorpios and Cancers are a great match" and a reading that can tell you the two specific places your particular charts fit, and the one place you will keep tripping. The first is a category. The second is you and them.

The honest answer: sun-sign compatibility is a real first read and a bad final one. Use it the way you would use knowing someone’s hometown. It tells you something.
